Coalition between ANC in Joburg and Patriotic Alliance in tatters

The African National Congress (ANC) has broken its coalition ties with the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in the Johannesburg council.

The PA only has one seat in the Johannesburg council.
ANC regional spokesperson Sasabona Manganye says the decision to end relations with the PA is a result of both parties not agreeing on how to “handle matters of governance in the municipal entities”.

“Failure to understand the separation between the party and the state, suspension of employees without following proper procedure and a lack of due regard for good governance by the PA are key to the collapse of the infant coalition.”
The two parties have differences on who will replace the PA’s Lloyd Phillips following his resignation, with mayor Geoffrey Makhubo appointing councillor Lawrence Khoza as the acting MMC for economic development.
The ANC managed to retain power in the City of Joburg by a coalition in partnership with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the African Independent Congress (AIC) and Al jama-ah.
