Muthambi was summoned by the ANC last week to explain several controversial decisions taken recently by the public broadcaster's COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

This comes after several protests against Motsoeneng's announcement that the SABC would no longer broadcast damage and destruction of infrastructure during community protests.

The SABC has since been accused of censorship ahead of the local government election on 3 August.

ANC Communications Sub-Committee chairperson Jackson Mthembu indicated that the ruling party expects the minister to act against Motsoeneng and the SABC board during a press briefing last week.

Mthembu told the media the SABC never consulted the ANC or South Africans on changing editorial policy.

Cabinet has spoken out on the SABC matter, saying they support media freedom, freedom of expression and the right of any person to access information in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Muthambi defended the SABC during a visit to Limpopo on Friday.

She told JacarandaFM News, when asked about the controversies, the public broadcaster is doing what it's supposed to do.

"The SABC operates within the legislation that is the Broadcasting Act and the Broadcast Code of Conduct as provided by the BCCSA and also in terms of their licence agreements," she said.
