ConCourt dismisses education dept’s #FixTheNorms appeal
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Equal Education has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s
decision to dismiss an application by the Department of Basic Education to
appeal a high court ruling on norms and standards at schools.

The aim of the norms and standards, which were set in November 2013, is to ensure that no school lacks infrastructure such as water, electricity or sanitation.
The department missed its own 2016 deadline to implement the norms and standards, leading to a court battle between the department and Equal Education.
In July, the Bhisho High Court ruled the delay in fixing infrastructure unconstitutional.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga applied for leave to appeal the high court judgment, but this was dismissed with costs on Friday.

Equal Education's Daniel Linde says it is unfortunate that the department wanted to appeal in the first place.
"We did say to the minister and the president that the goal now should be to fix the schools.”
Linde says they have requested a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa in order to find an amicable solution.
