COPE concerned about free and fair election

The Congress of the People (COPE) has raised concerns about the upcoming municipal elections and whether they will be free and fair.
Leader Mosiuoa Lekota addressed the media Monday morning about the party's concerns over what is happening at the SABC and recent revelations by former CEO Jimi Matthews.
Lekota said it was concerned about levels of censorship at the public broadcaster as well as their coverage of opposition parties, especially leading up to the election.
"We remain extremely unhappy and are, in fact, uncertain that there can be free and fair elections in the present regime of the abuse of the public broadcaster," Lekota said.
Lekota said they will hand in a letter with the office of the Public Protector, asking it to look into the abuse of power at the SABC.
Lekota lashed out at SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng and President Jacob Zuma, saying they act as if they are a law unto themselves, trampling on the constitution in the process.
"Hlaudi Motsoeneng regards himself as above the law and he is empowered, in this regard, by the head of the executive."
