Cope wants Zuma to face treason charges

The Congress of the People (Cope) has called on former President Jacob Zuma to be charged with treason.

Cope says it laid charges of treason and corruption against Zuma and the Gupta family in 2016.

Party spokesperson Dennis Bloem says the party now understands why the charges were not followed by law enforcement agencies.

"Because the Hawks, the police and the National Prosecuting Authority were captured by the Gupta," says Bloem.

He adds the evidence given by former deputy finance minister, Mcebisi Jonas, former African National Congress MP Vytjie Mentor and the former head of government communications, Themba Maseko, in the commission of inquiry into state capture makes it clear how Zuma sold the country.

He does not believe it is premature for the party to call for the charges against Zuma before the commission concludes its hearings.
