Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Department of Correctional Services has appointed a medical advisory panel and 393 additional nurses across the country in an effort to deal with the spread of Covid-19.
The additional resources will help the department curb the outbreak of Covid-19, particularly in the Eastern and Western Cape.
The decision follows resurgence in positive cases in East London, where a further 98 inmates at the East London prison tested positive.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says six more officials and three inmates have also tested positive for coronavirus in the Western Cape.
Another official also tested positive in Kimberley.
The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Correctional Services now stands at 321, with 92 recoveries.
In an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19, government will be releasing 19 000 low risk prisoners from prisons.
