The Department of Correctional Services has denied reports of a hunger strike at the Escourt prison in KwaZulu-Natal.
This comes after claims of disruptions by inmates where former president Jacob Zuma is serving his 15-month jail term.
Social media posts claim inside information is that inmates have also joined hands to support Zuma plight to be released from prison.
Zuma was charged with being in contempt of court for failing to appear the State Capture Commission of Inquiry.
The former head of state began his sentence on Thursday.
“There is no disruption of service at Estcourt, and the centre remains calm,” says the department’s spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
Sporadic protests have also erupted across the province with disgruntled supporters bolstering calls for Zuma’s early release.
At least 13 people were arrested on Friday.
