Corruption spikes in Gauteng, Joburg

A new report has revealed that corruption in Gauteng has gone up by 6.3% in 2019, while it spiked by 7.4% in Johannesburg.

Corruption Watch released its half-year report on corruption on Tuesday.

 

The organisation also revealed that corruption is most prevalent in Gauteng at 47.3%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal a 11.4%.

 

"Corruption in local offices of government - the municipalities - counts for 6.6% of all reports of corruption collected in this half-year period.

"Procurement irregularities in municipalities continue to be widely reported with 35.5% of the corruption cases speaking to this fact."

 

The organisation also revealed that corruption in the police sector has overtaken other sectors such as schools, health and local government.

 

"In some cases, we were told that police make random stops and searches of pedestrians or motorists for reasons of extortion rather than public duty."
