Trade union federation Cosatu has made the call, urging businesses that will remain open to grant employees time off to make their mark in the national polls.

Cosatu's Gerald Twala says despite May 29 being a public holiday and special voting available, some workers still have to report to work, leaving them with limited time to wait in the queue to vote.

"Some of the employers who didn't really give employers an opportunity to go and vote. You find they knock off very late, and by the time they arrive at voting stations, they are closed.

"That is why we lobbied to say, can't we call for employers to allow workers reasonable time to knock off on election day?”
