Cosatu in Gauteng hits out at former MEC Mahlangu
Updated | By Samkelo Maseko
Cosatu in Gauteng has accused former Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu of ruling the department with an iron fist, and acting like a dictator.
The federation briefed the media at Cosatu House on the report into the deaths of 94 psychiatric patients in the Life Esidimeni tragedy.
Provincial Secretary Dumisani Dakile welcomed Mahlangu's resignation.
Dakile says their tragedy is a reflection of the crisis the department finds itself in.
"The death of the 94 patients are just the tip of the iceberg as many of our people are subjected to similar situations in various health institutions across the province. The attitude of the department remains arrogant, insensitive and inhumane - not only to patients, but also to the workers' plight that are expected and required to provide a service to the community," says Dakile.
Dakile says Mahlangu acted like a dictator - never taking advice from anyone.
"The department has been ruled with an iron fist. It's either my way or the highway," says Dakile.
