Cosatu to march in Joburg on Thursday

Trade union federation Cosatu will be marching to the offices of the South African Local Government Association, the Human Rights Commission, the Department of Employment and Labour, and the Office of the Premier in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The federation wants the government to find solutions to rampant unemployment, high interest rates, as well as the energy and water crises. 


The marchers are expected to gather at 9am at Cosatu House in Braamfontein.


Joburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla said metro cops will be deployed to monitor the affected streets.


"They will then march to the South African Local Government Association at Hoof Street in Braamfontein where they will hand over their first memorandum, they will then march to the South African Human Rights Commission at Stiemens Street in Braamfontein and hand over their second memorandum, then the participants will march it to the Department of Labour at De Korte Street in Braamfonetin and hand over the third memorandum.


"The fourth and last memorandum will be handed over at the Office of the Premier at Rahima Moosa and Hendry Nxumalo Street in Newtown."


Fihla warned of traffic disruptions in the CBD and in Braamfontein.


"We are expecting traffic disruptions and the Johannesburg CBD and Braamfontein while the participants march between 9am and 4pm, officers will be deployed to monitor and to regulate traffic during the march. Motoristss are urged to be patient and officers will assist in diverting traffic from the affected routes."
