‘There’s no case here’ - Diepsloot residents demand leaders’ release

Diepsloot community leaders maintain the state has no case against three people arrested and charged over last week’s anti-crime protests
Lefa Nkala, Loyiso Toyiya and Jack Hlongwane are expected to apply for bail in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
They face several charges, including malicious injury to property, damage to essential infrastructure, intimidation and public violence.
Dozens of Diepsloot residents who demonstrated outside court on Wednesday were adamant they would not leave without their three leaders, who’ve been behind bars since Thursday last week.
Community leader Reverend Thokwane Dithuge said the charges against the three men were frivolous.
“Looking at the charges against them, it’s not on. Today we expect to go home with them. There’s no case here.”
After Monday’s postponement, Dithuge called for calm until the matter returned to court.
But he warned it’s getting harder to calm the angry crowd.
“The emotions are high. Yesterday we met, and it was worse than this. People are angry, and you know when people are angry, it’s hard to manage them.”
It’s expected the state will oppose the trio’s bail application.
