“All the campaigns in North West will run as planned nothing will stop. The provincial office bearers in North West will run all campaigns including those against corruption and the murder of Moss Phakoe,” he said after his election.

Phakoe was shot dead at his Rustenburg Noord home on 14 March 2009, after he had handed over a dossier detailing corruption in the Rustenburg municipality to top African National Congress leaders.

Phetoe was elected deputy general secretary of Cosatu at the elective national congress in Midrand.

His elevation to the national office meant he had to vacate his position as the Cosatu provincial secretary in North West.

“The provincial office bearers will have to meet to fill the post,” he said.

Phetoe had been the face of Cosatu campaigns in North West, he lead campaigns including a campaign against the exploitation of farmer workers and retail workers as well as Swartruggens toll gate.

He said a night vigil planned for December 5, to force government to lower the toll fee from R75 to R58 for a light vehicle had been postponed due to Cosatu’s 30th anniversary in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Swartruggens tollgate on the N4 highway between Rustenburg and Mahikeng, is regarded as the most expensive tollgate.
