Cosatu strike: Roads to avoid
Updated | By Laila Majiet & Amogelang Maledu
Various cities across the country are likely to be brought to a standstill on Wednesday.
Cosatu has announced a nationwide strike against state capture.
The trade union federation will lead marches in all nine provinces.
The strike is also in protest of corruption, job losses and labour brokers.
About 100 000 people across the country are expected to participate in the strike.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says officers will be on the ground to monitor the procession.
JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane says marchers will make several stops to hand over memorandums.
Mamonyane says they expect about 3000 people to gather in the streets of Johannesburg from 09:00.
These are the roads to avoid:
1. Jorissen Street
2. Civic Boulevard
3. Hoofd Street
4. Biccard Street
5. Simmonds Street
6. Marshall Street
Mamonyane says these roads will be temporarily closed as the strikers make their way through the city centre.
The march will begin at Cosatu House on Jorissen Street at 11:00.
It will proceed to Metro Centre on Civic Boulevard in Braamfontein where a memorandum will be delivered.
The group will move onto left onto Hoofd Street and then left onto Biccard Street towards BankCity where the second memorandum will be handed over, Mamonyane explains.
They will then deliver a memorandum at the Premier's office at the Gauteng Provincial Government on Simmonds Street in Marshalltown, before making their final stop at the Chamber of Mines on Marshall Street.
Cosatu says its members are ready to shut down the country.
