Country cannot claim success over HIV/Aids: Ramaphosa

"South Africa, with the highest number of people living with HIV/Aids, has rolled out the biggest treatment programme in the world," he told reporters at a briefing in Johannesburg on the 2016 International Aids Conference.

 

"[However] we are still concerned about the stubbornly high numbers of new infections."

 

Ramaphosa said the stigma around HIV/Aids continued to undermine treatment programmes.

 

The 2016 conference will be held in Durban. This is the second time South Africa hosts the conference. It was last held in the country in 2000.

 

"A decade and a half later... we've made much progress in tackling the epidemic in Africa... we can claim many achievements but cannot claim success," Ramaphosa said.

 

The response to HIV/Aids had to remain prominent and global coverage had to be continuous.
