Court grants bail to four arrested students

Four students arrested for public violence in Braamfontein have been granted bail.

Four students

Sivuyile Mhatu, Oradiretse Masebe, Siyasanga Tshembele and Moses Leshadi are facing charges of public violence.

 

Leshadi and Masebe were have been in custody due to pending cases in Stellenbosch while the other two were released on R500 police bail.

 

The cases are linked to the August 2020 protest where they were arrested for contravening lockdown regulations.

 

They are set to appear in court in that case on March 25.

All the accused appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

 

The state did not oppose the bail application.

 

In their affidavit read by their defence attorney, Masebe and Leshadi denied committing any public violence.

 

Their version is that they were entering a nearby shop to buy milk for their eyes after police teargassed the crowd.

 

The pair who were remanded in custody were granted bail R1500 each. 

 

All four will return to court on March 31.
