Court hears Meyiwa murder accused used as ‘scapegoats’

One of the defence attorneys in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has accused the state of using the accused as scapegoats.

Malesela Teffo, who represents accused number one to four in the high-profile trial, says the National Prosecution Authority initially wanted to charge the seven people who were present in the house when the former Bafana captain was shot and killed.
“Initially, the NPA or DPP in South Gauteng had all intentions or purposes to charge the people in that house,” he told the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.
“Along the way the DPP just stopped, for the reason known with him or her, to proceed with the indictment against the seven people present in that house and then instead our client, which are the five accused, became scapegoats to avoid arresting those five people in that house.”
It’s been almost eight years since the goalkeeper was shot and killed in Vosloorus.

He was at the home of the mother of then girlfriend Kelly Khumalo when he was killed.
According to Teffo, the second docket was meant to charge Khumalo, Chicco Twala’s son Longwe together with those who were present when Meyiwa was killed.
One of the charges that would be brought would be defeating the ends of justice for “hatching a plan” in Meyiwa’s murder.
In that investigation, Twala was named accused 1 while Khumalo was named accused 2.
Kelly’s mother and sister were also named while Meyiwa’s friends were also considered suspects.
