Court hears Senzo Meyiwa crime scene looked like ‘nothing happened’

Sergeant Patrick Mthethwa has told the High Court in Pretoria there were no obvious signs of a shooting when he and a colleague arrived at the Senzo Meyiwa crime scene.

The defence attorney for accused number one to four, Advocate TT Thobane, grilled Mthethwa on the failure by police to cordon off the crime scene on their first visit to the house where Meyiwa was shot and killed.

Mthethwa took the stand in the high-profile murder trial on Thursday morning.

“And from what we could see inside the house one couldn’t tell if there was anything that had happened there,” he told the court.

Mthethwa also testified that they were unsure if the shooting took place inside or outside the house.

Thus the pair did not bother cordoning off the area.

“Even cordoning the scene off, what scene were we going to cordoned off? At least now when we were coming back from the hospital, we at least had information from someone who was there. Hence now we were able to know who the hat belonged to as to who the crutch belonged to and then we were able to cordon the scene off.”

According to Mthethwa he and Mathebula were among the first police officers to arrive on the scene on the night Meyiwa was shot and killed.

He also told the court that the radio control room had called him to attend to the scene at 20:53.

Mthethwa's testimony has revealed major contradictions between him and that of Sergeant Thabo Mosia.

Previously Mosia told court that he had arrived on scene after midnight.

However Mthethwa's testimony has shown that Mosia actually arrived shortly after he and Mathebula went back on the scene for the second time.

This is believed to be between 21:00 and 22:00.

Mosia also claimed that he found the late Brigadier Ndlovu at the scene and that he he was the one who called the task team.

But Mthethwa spoke about a different version of events.

Mthewthwa told court that Mosia got to the scene moments before Ndlovu arrived with the task team.

Court will proceed on Friday after the defence requested Mthethwa to bring his pocket book with him.
