Dlamini is appealing an earlier decision not to grant him bail.

Dlamini was arrested during violent protests at Wits, amid calls for free higher education.

The student leader faces five charges that include malicious damage to property, theft and assault.

His legal team told the court yesterday that the charges are trumped up and politically motivated, alluding to a meeting between President Jacob Zuma, NPA head Shaun Abrahams and Justice Minister.

"This is the version of [Abrahams] which he repeated in Parliament and the version of the minister that this meeting was about the situation at the universities and hardly four or five days thereafter the leaders of the Fees Must Fall movement are rounded up and Mr Mcebo Dlamini is detained, where he is still sitting in a cell," Advocate Dali Mpofu said.

Dlamini supporters will once again make their way to court in anticipation of his release.
