Covid-19 death toll passes 97 000 in SA

South Africa has breached the 97 000 mark of people who succumbed to Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) published in its latest report that the death toll stands at 97 250 after the Department of Health reported a further 257 deaths.
The institute reported a slight decrease in the number of new infections, with 1 094 new Covid-19 cases confirmed in the latest reporting cycle.
This brings the country’s total cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 3 642 925.
The latest increase represents a 6.9% positivity rate.
Gauteng continues to report the majority of cases, with 482 new infections reported in the last 24 hours.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (44%), followed by Western Cape (16%). Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 13%; Mpumalanga accounted for 10%; North West accounted for 6%; Free State and Limpopo each accounted for 4% respectively; Eastern Cape accounted for 3%, and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in the statement.
There has been an increase of 47 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 3 967 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.
