Covid-19 death toll rises to 27

The coronavirus death toll in South Africa has risen to 27 after the respiratory disease claimed two more lives.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize hosted a public engagement on the country's Covid-19 response in Durban on Monday.


The first fatality was a 68-year-old man from the Western Cape who presented with several underlying conditions.


“This has been the pattern for most of the people that we have seen where there has been some underlying ailment,” said Mkhize.


“The one in Gauteng is the one raising a bit of concern for me. The 57-year-old male who was admitted in acute respiratory distress and was then take to the ICU.”

Meshoe has been in self-quarantine at his home for the past 22 days after testing positive for the virus. "Today I can report that I'm healthier that I was this time last year... I am hoping that within the next five to ten days I will go for a second test so that we finally bury this matter.

Mkhize says his condition took a turn for the worse and he later died in ICU.


He added: “We do not have record of any underlying conditions.”


The number of infections are now up to 2272- a rise of 99 since Sunday.
