The South African Police Service has welcomed the sentencing of a notorious cross-border vehicle smuggling kingpin.
Vusi Malwane was found to be the head of a syndicate which hijacked vehicles in the Emanguzi area of KZN for the past decade.
The vehicles would then be smuggled to Mozambique through various borders in the province.
Malwane previously escaped from custody in 2014.
“Forty-four-year-old Malwane has been sentenced to a collective 55 years imprisonment for kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” National Police Commissioner Fanni Masemola said on Thursday.
“The Ingwavuma Regional Court also sentenced Malwane to four years imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody.”
