Police in the Eastern Cape are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a crash claimed the lives of five people in Queenstown on Saturday morning.

Police spokesperson Namhla Mdleleni was unable to confirm the identities of the victims, but tributes on social media and from government confirmed former TV personality Akhumzi Jezile, actor Thobani Mseleni and singer Siyasanga Kobese were among the victims.

The Department of Arts and Culture was among those who expressed its condolences to the victims' loved ones.

"...the nation has been dealt a triple and breath-taking blow that has sent a wave of grief throughout South Africa," reads a statement by the department. "All three were young, brilliant shining stars from whom we'd have undoubtedly derived joy and delight from their long careers- and lives."

Mseleni recently starred in the critically acclaimed and award winning film 'Inxeba: The Wound'.

Jezile was best known for his time in front of the cameras at YoTV and was awarded a SAFTA in 2014.

Kobese was known for her music as well as her time in the drama series 'Zabalaza'.

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande has again, in the wake of the crash, called on motorists to adhere to drive responsibly.
