DA calls for Mantashe’s head over Eskom woes
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Democratic Alliance (DA) wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to axe Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe.
This comes after Eskom on implemented stage 6 loadshedding for the first time on Monday as the county’s power woes intensify.
The embattled state-owned blamed the heavy rain that caused coal handling and operational problems at some power stations.
But DA interim leader John Steenhuisen believes Mantashe is the largest obstacle to sustainable electricity supply and has urged Ramaphosa to show leadership by removing him from the portfolio.
“[Mantashe is] unable to deal with even the most basics elements of his portfolio,” says Steenhuisen.
He has also written a letter to National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise, asking her to recall Parliament and for Ramaphosa to explain the crisis as Eskom to South Africans.

Steenhuisen has urged Ramaphosa to cut his trip in Egypt short and come home to deal with the Eskom crisis.
“So while we’ve got a president next to the Nile, we’ve got a minister of energy in denial.”
