DA to challenge Trollip’s removal in court

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has described the removal of former Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Athol Trollip, as an insult to voters.
Maimane briefed the media on Tuesday, following the removal of both Trollip and the speaker of council Jonathan Lewack on Monday.
"What took place yesterday can only be described as a sham, as a mockery and an insult to voters," said Maimane.
Maimane said he newly-formed coalition in the metro, which includes the African National Congress (ANC) and the United Democratic Movement (UDM), did not follow proper processes in appointing a new speaker.
He adds that Section 33 of the Municipal Act provides that should the municipal manager be unavailable, a person chosen by the MEC of Local Government needs topreside over the election of a speaker.
This process was not correctly followed as councillor Buyelwa Mafaya was elected as the speaker to oversee proceedings.
He adds after consulting with the party's legal team, it was decided that the removal of Trollip will be taken to court.
"We are of the opinion that the sitting was procedurally invalid and lacked legitimate authority to elect a new speaker and to pass a motion of no confidence in the executive mayor."
