DA denies claims of ‘jobs for pals’ in Joburg council

Opposition parties in the City of Johannesburg have accused the DA-led administration of corruption and maladministration.
The political parties, including the ANC, briefed the media in Johannesburg on Friday.
They are unhappy with what they perceive to be the DA’s interference in recruitment processes in the City of Johannesburg.
The city has a number of vacant senior posts since the dismissal of 130 workers whose contracts were deemed illegal.
Opposition parties now claim the DA is reserving those jobs for Cape Townians.
But Speaker of Council, Vasco da Gama, has denied the claims, saying all appointments were done in terms of the Public Service Act.
“The Public Service Act, 1994 provides in section 15(3) for the secondment of an employee to any government, institution, any other body or person or any council,” he says.
“The Act allows for cooperation and sharing of resources between the three spheres of government. Furthermore, this was presented at the council meeting of 27 May 2022 and accordingly passed for the administration.
“There is one acting secretary to council, and all the other allegations have no substance.”
