DA gives De Lille deadline to make submissions

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has until the close of business on Wednesday to make written submissions to the Democratic Alliance's (DA) Federal Executive on why she should remain in office.

The party's caucus in the city council voted for her removal last week.

The DA is accusing De Lille of bribery and corruption, accusations she has described as an attempt to taint her name.

The party's federal chair James Selfe says the representations will be considered in due course.

"We will consider those representations when the federal executive meets and should the federal executive decide she should resign she will be given 48 hours in which to comply. Failing which her membership of the party will cease.

"Her recourse will actually be through the courts because the internal processes would be finished."

De Lille has in the past said she will continue tending to the problems of the poor and vulnerable in Cape Town.

She believes the DA changed its constitution recently to include a recall clause specifically to have her axed.

"The question the DA must answer is why they are not prepared to wait for the outcome of their own processes, the disciplinary hearings currently against me. Why are they looking for a shortcut and why  are they objecting to my hearings being open to the media and the public as requested by me as the accused in this matter?"
