"We want the court to declare the decision unconstitutional because all executive decisions in South Africa have to be rational," Selfe says.

He adds that they asked the court to deal with the matter urgently as it affects ordinary South Africans.

The party also wants the court to order President Zuma to provide all documents, electronic records, correspondence and advice relating to his decision within five days.

"The implications of a downgrade is making it incredibly difficult for ordinary South Africans to make a living," he says.

President Zuma, Pravin Gordhan, Mcebisi Jonas as well as newly-appointed Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba are listed as respondents in the application.
