"What happened yesterday was nothing short of a coupe. The whole process was flawed and therefore unlawful," says Moodey.

The DA were heading to court on Friday morning over what it calls the undemocratic removal from office of its mayor in Tshwane, Stevens Mokgalapa.

On Thursday evening, the Tshwane council voted Mokgalapa out through a successful motion of no confidence.

However, the DA's provincial leader, John Moodey says the entire process was legally flawed, starting with the appointment of an acting speaker, who he alleges was receiving instructions from the MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Lebogang Maile.

"What happened yesterday was nothing short of a coupe. The whole process was flawed and therefore unlawful," says Moodey.

The DA will now be petition the court on an urgent basis and hopes to have the matter heard on the same day or, at the latest, by Monday.

"What happened is indeed a huge threat to our democracy," says Moodey.

Maile was expected to hold a media briefing on Friday to outline key decisions taken by Exco (Provincial Cabinet) on both the City of Tshwane and the City of Johannesburg.
