DA: Joburg Library renovations seemingly at a standstill
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The DA in Johannesburg has lamented the delay in renovation work at the Johannesburg City Library.
The library, which opened its doors in 1935, is undergoing an R900 000 facelift and has been closed since November last year to allow for the completion of the construction work.
But the DA says very little construction work has been done so far.
The party’s Bongani Nkwanyana says the first construction company reportedly removed the roof without ever putting it back, causing the library to flood.
“While conducting an oversight visit to the library, I found that indeed the library is closed and the building decorated with scaffolding as if there is a refurbishment going on, but I noticed that the constructor on site was not even working.”
Nkwanyana says his queries have so far been met by a wall of silence from several top officials.
“I will urgently be writing a letter to the MMC for Community Development, seeking clear and concise answers about the reasons behind the library's closure. The citizens of Johannesburg deserve transparency and accountability from their government, and I am determined to ensure they receive it.
“The decision to close the library, taken by the ANC-EFF-PA coalition of corruption, is not only ill-timed but also deprives the citizens of Johannesburg of their constitutional right to access information. This is a stark reminder of the government's disregard for the educational needs and aspirations of our community.
“The library was closed during exam time for learners, and this is negatively affecting them and the community as they need to access it for information.”
