DA lays charges against Mandela ‘thieves’

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has laid criminal charges against African National Congress (ANC) officials in connection with funds linked to the funeral of former President Nelson Mandela.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane investigated allegations of misappropriation of public funds, improper conduct and maladministration by the provincial government in the Eastern Cape.
Mkhwebane found that the government improperly used public funds amounting to R330 million meant for education and infrastructure in the province.

The DA's Refiloe Ntsekhe on Monday laid a charge against director-general in the Office of the Premier, Marion Mbina-Mthembu.
"The Mandela Funeral Report paints an ugly yet clear picture of the kind of corruption that the ANC has become so good at. The theft of R330-million by the ANC in this province is another indicator of a crony criminal network masquerading as a government of the people.

"Ms Mbina-Mthembu and others must face the full might of the law and swop their suits for orange overalls," Ntsekhe says.
Provincial spokesperson Judy Mpetsheni says they will be releasing a statement on Monday afternoon.
