DA leaders meet over election performance
Updated | By Thabo Tshabalala
The Federal Executive of the Democratic Alliance will be meeting on Monday to discuss the party's performance in the sixth democratic elections.
While the DA remains the official opposition in Parliament, the party lost five seats in the National Assembly that reduced its representation from 89 seats in 2014 to 84 seats when Parliament is set to re-convene.
The party was also unseated by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as the official opposition in three provinces, namely Mpumalanga, North West, and Limpopo.
Many reports have suggested that the results of the elections could lead to the ousting of DA leader Mmusi Maimane.
However, spokesperson for Maimane's office, Mabine Seabe, says the aim of the Federal Executive meeting at the party headquarters in Bruma, will be solely to unpack their performance.
"The Federal Executive will be sitting today (Monday) for an ordinary meeting following the election results. The meeting will sit and deliberate and do a deep dive into the election results.
"We'll also prepare the party to govern again in the Western Cape and also ensure that we are ready for the first sitting of the sixth parliament and the provincial legislature."
On a question as to whether the Federal Executive will be discussing the future of DA leader Mmusi Maimane, Seabe responded by saying:
"The only platform which discusses the leadership of the organisation is the Federal Congress and that sits every three years.
"The next Congress will sit in 2021," added Seabe.
