DA ‘obstructed’ during oversight visit to Yeoville Police Station

The Democratic Alliance (DA) claims its oversight visit to the Yeoville Police Station in Johannesburg was met with resistance on Monday.
The party's chief whip John Steenhuisen paid the station a visit following report around the excessive expenditure by police to detain illegal immigrants.
Steenhuisen says the party failed to get the answers it was seeking.

"We were met with a very obstructive response and approach and much of the information we wanted to gather we were not able to do so.”
Steenhuisen says the station commander erred by preventing an MP to do proper oversight.
“We will certainly be taking it up with the national commissioner. Members of Parliament have a duty to go out into communities, on the ground to make sure that the presentations we're receiving in the air-conditioned rooms of Parliament are actually what is happening on the ground."
Steenhuisen says the station has cited a lack of communication ahead of the visit as a reason for the problems.
"Often it’s very helpful to do unplanned oversights because it means you get to see the real situation and not a situation that has been prepared and curated for you to witness."
Steenhuisen says the party will return to the station to seek answers.
