Party leader John Steenhuisen led an anti-crime march o the Langlaagte police station on Thursday.

The march came days after Fast Guns gang member Tyrone Jones was sentenced to two life terms plus 122 years imprisonment.

The High Court in Johannesburg convicted Jones of crimes committed in Riverlea between 2021 and June 2022

Steenhuisen said the DA has a plan to curb crime in Riverlea and the rest of Gauteng.

"The people of Riverlea are tired of violent crime. They are tired of losing their children to gangsters. We know as well that the people of Riverlea are living under a crime invasion, and that is because we have a government that does not care.”

He told supporters that while violent crime has become a common occurrence in the area, almost none of the murders are ever solved.

"To make matters even worse, when residents report crimes to the police, they know the chance is close to zero that the criminals will ever be brought to book.

“Four-point-five million police dockets have been closed over the past five years because SAPS couldn’t even collect basic evidence. That 5.4 million cases where criminals went free include many cases from Riverlea.

"There is no justice for the people of Riverlea because (Police Minister) Bheki Cele and the ANC are too busy looking after themselves to look after the people," said Steenhuisen.

"But it’s not just the ANC. We all know that the ANC lost its majority in Johannesburg and is now running this city in coalition with other parties that have sold out its voters, parties like the Patriotic Alliance.”
