DA vows to cut taxes if party wins elections

The DA’s Dion George on Monday said the party would support vulnerable South Africans by cutting taxes and protecting their social wages if it comes to power.
George briefed the media in Cape Town on Monday on the party's alternative budget.
The briefing came ahead of the national budget set to be tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on Wednesday.
George said the party would seek to evolve the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) into a job seekers grant.
“This approach facilitates a more efficient allocation of resources compared to coupons with existing grant systems, as market-driven allocation decisions are more efficient than those made by the state. In South Africa, evidence indicates that cash grants of this nature are utilised effectively by recipient households for essentials such as food, education, transport and healthcare. Global research shows that support does not deter beneficiaries from gaining employment. Rather, the transfer serves as a financial cushion that aids in job search efforts.
“We will cut taxes by increasing the zero-rated food buckets and also cut back on the taxes on fuel to make it less expensive for people to buy food in South Africa.
“The never-ending cost of living crisis is the worst that we have faced in living memory, and it is time now that the people do to the government what the government has done to them. The government has not responded because it simply does not care.”
