DA wants Hawks to probe Gupta wedding without fear, favour
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
The DA has called on the Hawks to conduct its investigation into allegations that public funds were used to pay for the Guptas' lavish Sun City wedding in 2013 without fear or favour.
It comes after the unit yesterday confirmed to Parliament that it is investigating charges laid against, among others, mineral resource minister Mosebenzi Zwane as well as the Gupta brothers.
They have been accused of using public funds, meant for poor communities, to pay for the wedding - washed through a number of front companies, including a dairy farm in the Free State.
The group faces charges of, among others, racketeering, money laundering, and submitting false, or untrue, tax returns.
"The fact that public funds, meant to assist the poor, were allegedly used to pay for President Jacob Zuma's number one clients, the Guptas family wedding is grotesque and must be investigated without fear or favour, by the Hawks." said DA Shadow Minister of Finance David Maynier
