This comes after the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure confirmed that a total of R1.3 million was spent to install generators at the houses of cabinet ministers and their deputies during the 2021/22 financial year.

South Africans have been suffering through a prolonged period of load shedding over the past month as Eskom struggles to keep the light on.

The DA's Samantha Graham-Maré believes the Department of Public Works to be in contravention of the Guide for Members of the Executive.

"It is simply vile that Minister (Patricia) de Lille would prioritise her comrades, instead of being proactive and using this money to ensure power for all hospitals and clinics, crime hotspots and struggling small enterprises.

“This latest incident has shown that for Minister De Lille, the comfort and protection of the Executive is of far bigger consideration than the welfare of South Africans.

“The ministers found to have contravened the guide must repay the money, and it must be prioritised to support vulnerable South Africans," says Graham-Maré.
