Govt spending millions to keep lights on at ministers’ homes
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure says a total of R1.3 million has been spent to install generators at the houses of cabinet ministers and their deputies during the 2021/22 financial year.
The department’s spokesperson Thami Mchunu has also confirmed that no load shedding is implemented at Bryntirion Estate, which houses members of the executive.
However, not all the executives stay at the estate.
As ordinary South Africans suffer through a prolonged period of load shedding, the DA says it is unfair for ministers to be provided with generators while everyone else has to struggle in the dark.
"Minister De Lille must utilise taxpayers’ money to support the poor and vulnerable, not abuse it to ensure her and her fellow fat-cat ministers' comfort. ANC ministers are paid enormous salaries, and while they refuse to solve the country’s power disaster, they should at the very least pay for their own generators and fuel.
“Government must remember that it serves at the behest of the people. The people are not meant to serve them," says DA's Samantha Graham-Maré.
