DA wants more details over resignation of PIC boss

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the board of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) to reveal all the facts surrounding the resignation of its CEO, Dr Daniel Matjila.

The PIC confirmed in a statement on Friday night that Majila’s offer to resign has been accepted and is effective immediately.

The statement adds: “The Board wishes to state that Dr Matjila has over the years in various capacities, served the PIC with dignity and distinction. He has played an integral role in fulfilling the PIC’s vision of meeting and exceeding our clients’ mandates. Under his leadership, the PIC has grown from strength to strength and has attracted dedicated and competent employees of world class calibre.”

However, the DA’s David Maynier says this cannot be the end of the matter.

“We need to be sure there was no ‘golden handshake’ and that he will not be allowed to escape and evade accountability for his actions at the Public Investment Corporation,” adds Maynier.

He says the main opposition will also want to see Matjila appearing for the Commission of Inquiry appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

It will investigate several questionable transactions dating back from last year, as well as allegations of undue influence by influential persons.

The PIC oversees more than R2 trillion, with its biggest client the Government Employees Pension Fund.
