DA: ‘We need to stop the growth of informal settlements’
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng warns against rising tensions in the south of Johannesburg, due to illegal land grabs.
On Friday, residents of areas that include parts of Lenasia, took to the streets to protest the growth of informal settlements and land invasions in their areas.
DA Constituency Head, Alan Fuchs, says political manipulation and broken promises have resulted in the growth of informal settlement in Lenasia South, Zakariyya Park and Ennerdale.
“When it comes to housing, the province is responsible for that particular function".
“How many times have we heard politicians say they will not allow land grabs, and this is what has happened here,” adds Fuchs
It is said that the growth of these informal settlements has resulted in increased crime and environmental degradation.
