DA welcomes move to keep SA on level 1

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the government’s decision not to impose further restrictions on businesses amid the spike in Covid-19 numbers.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday evening that the country will remain on lockdown level 1 despite the emergence of as new variant, dubbed Omicron.
Earlier this week the country’s scientists lifted the lid on the new variant that’s believed to be driving the spike in cases, especially in Gauteng.
DA leader John Steenhuisen says the party also welcome the government’s intention to lift the state of disaster.
“And we will hold them to this in the coming months. We also welcome the president’s position on travel bans, and his engagement with foreign travel partners to get them to lift international travel restrictions.
We reject any restrictions on freedom of movement – meaning we do not support the curfew and continue to call for it to end.
“With respect to gatherings, we note that the ANC flouted their own regulations during the election. They should not create rules that they themselves are not prepared to abide by.”
Steenhuisen urged the government to ensure that healthcare facilities are adequately equipped ahead of the looming fourth wave.
“Monitor hospitalisation rates and bed availability. Ensure that every healthcare worker is placed, as a matter of priority. Interns and other qualified healthcare workers waiting for placement are dead assets to the healthcare system if not placed.”
