Damaged pipeline leads to dry Christmas for some Tshwane residents

Some 320 000 Pretoria East residents could be without water for the next eight months due to a water supply pipeline that was washed away by floods.

The torrential rain in the province claimed the lives of at least two people and left over 1000 residents displaced in Mamelodi.

It also damaged a pipeline which provides water to several areas, including Cullinan, Rayton, Refilwe, Petra Diamond Mine and the Zonderwater Prison.

Engineers estimate that repair work to the pipeline could take up to eight months to complete.

Acting Tshwane mayor and MMC for Utility Service Abel Tau says the city will provide water tankers to the affected areas while repair work is underway.

"We have been able to start with the work that needs to be done and we are hoping to have temporary infrastructure installed. We are hopeful that we can do this before Christmas.”

Magalies Water has been supplying the affected areas with over ten megalitres of water per day.
