Herman Mashaba of the Democratic Alliance has been elected as the new mayor of Johannesburg.

The Black Like Me founder won with 144 votes against the ANC's Parks Tau who received 125 votes.

A total of 269 votes were cast with no spoilt ballots recorded.

Mashaba postponed his inaugural speech following the passing of an ANC councillor during the first sitting of council.

He said he would make his inaugural speech at the next council sitting on 13 September.

All councillors have been sworn and the DA's Vasco da Gama elected as the new speaker.

The DA's Kevin Wax was elected as the new chief whip.

No political party managed to secure an outright majority in Johannesburg, the country's economic hub.

The EFF and other opposition parties last week announced they'd support the DA to elect new local governments in several hung municipalities.

Proceedings were delayed several times during the first inaugural council meeting in Johannesburg on Monday.

A scuffle broke out between party agents, with some calling for a re-run of the vote for speaker.

Councillors raised concerns about some members showing their ballots to party agents before placing it in the ballot box.

EFF members also disrupted the sitting early on in the day, as ANC councillor-elect Dan Bovu waited to be sworn in.

The EFF has lodged a case against Bovu for corruption and bribery.
