DA’s Mpho Phalatse vows not to take Joburg mayoral chain for granted

The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Mpho Phalatse has described her election as the new Johannesburg mayor as a huge honour and one she won’t take for granted.

Phalatse addressed the media after she got voted in as the new mayor of the country’s economic hub on Monday evening.

She beat the African National Congress’ (ANC) Mpho Moerane by 23 votes.

“It’s a huge honour I don’t take for granted. Joburg is the economic hub of South Africa and many ways of the continent. To be trusted with a mammoth task as a female is really saying to a lot of women out there that you can really do it you can be trusted too and you’re not the other.

“You’re good enough and I hope that I will be a trailblazer for many other women who are coming after me who’ll also put their hands up for all sorts of things.”

In what was the worst performance in an election by the ANC since the dawn of democracy, this year's local government elections has seen the ruling party lose some of the country's key metros.

On Monday, the ANC lost Joburg and the City of Ekurhueni when the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) voted with the DA.

It's also anticipated that the EFF will vote with the DA to keep the ANC out of the City of Tshwane on Tuesday.
