The DA's Retief Odendaal has been elected as the new mayor in Nelson Mandela Bay after Eugene Johnson was ousted in a no-confidence vote.
Odendaal was elected in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Sixty-two councillors voted in favour of her removal and 58 voted against the motion at a council meeting in the Feather Market Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
Odendaal was first elected as a councillor in 2009 and served as the leader of the DA caucus between 2014 and 2016.
Between 2016 and 2018 he served as MMC for Budget and Treasury and was instrumental in turning the city’s finances around.
The DA says the mayor and his multi-party coalition will now set about putting the metro on the path of good governance.
Some of Odendaal's challenges include the looming day zero as water challenges plague the coastal city.
