On this day in 2013: SA buries its greatest son

Today exactly three years ago South Africans and the world said their final farewell to "Africa's greatest son" Nelson Mandela, during an emotional state funeral in his hometown of Qunu.

The world decended on the small village in the Eastern Cape with global icons like Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson and the Prince of Wales in attendance. Millions more watched by million across the word. 

 

The burial of the anti-apartheid icon followed a service attended by 4 000 mourners.

 

During the proceedings, President Jacob Zuma declared that Nelson Mandela's "extraordinary journey" was now over.

 

"We extend yet again, our deepest condolences to mama Graca Machel, mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the entire extended family," Zuma said.

 

"Madiba has run a good race. He declared in his own words in 1994," he said.
