De Lille: Why is the DA looking for a shortcut?

The Democratic Alliance's (DA) senior leaders have given the party's Cape Town Caucus permission to vote on a second internal motion of no confidence in Mayor Patricia de Lille.

The DA's Federal Executive (FedEx) met on Wednesday and gave a green light to the caucus' intention.

It's not clear when the caucus will vote but the outcome will be sent back to the FedEx to make a final decision on De Lille's fate.

But this is only a political party matter and won't be voted on in City Council, meaning De Lille would keep her job as Mayor if the DA removes her from its ranks.

Western Cape DA leader, Bonginkosi Madikizela, says the party has not discussed who should replace De Lille.

"No, we are not there yet. We don't want to put the cart before the horse. We don't want to pre-empt the outcome of the motion. Things might change and the caucus might vote to change this so it would be premature."

Meanwhile, De Lille says she will continue tending to the problems of the poor and vulnerable in the City.

She believes the DA changed its constitution recently to include a recall clause specifically to have her axed.

"The question the DA must answer is why they are not prepared to wait for the outcome of their own processes, the disciplinary hearings currently against me. Why are they looking for a shortcut and why  are they objecting to my hearings being open to the media and the public as requested by me as the accused in this matter?"
