Gift of the Givers says dead fish can be seen at the bottom of the now completely dry Nqweba Dam in Graaff-Reinet.

The organisation says the area has been brought to its knees by the devastating drought.

Boreholes in the immediate vicinity of the dam have also run dry.

Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imitiaz Sooliman says the Nqweba Dam is an example of the drought crisis in the Eastern Cape.

"If you go to the dam, you just see the bottom of the dam, you see dead fish lying everywhere. The dead fish, the dam and the sorrow of the people tell a very sad story in Graaf-Reinet," says Sooliman.

He adds the water crisis is having a horrowing impact on residents of the town.

"Many animals are dying, there is no water to quench thirst, there's no water to drink medication and we aren't even sure if the kids at school will even have water tomorrow," warns Sooliman.

Gift of the Givers says plans are in place to transport water to Graff Reinet and also find alternative water sources.
