Seven more bodies have been pulled from the Jukskei River in Johannesburg.
This brings the death toll to nine
Sunday’s discovery comes amid an ongoing search and rescue mission for churchgoers who were swept away by flash floods in the north of Johannesburg.
Two bodies were pulled from the river on Saturday evening.
The churchgoers were swept away during a baptism ritual in the Jukskei River at Bramley Park in Sandton on Saturday.
The ritual apparently involved some 33 people, with 20 managing to pull themselves from the river.
"We continued with the search from Corlett Drive up until Grayton Drive and in between these areas we managed to recover seven bodies.
“From the morning until now we have seven bodies adding to the two that were discovered yesterday and in total it means we have discovered nine bodies,” says Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.
"We will be searching along the stream throughout the day today and we should be able to give you another feedback this afternoon as to where we stand so for now. Eight more bodies are still missing."
