The churchgoers were swept away during a baptism ritual in the Jukskei River at Bramley Park in Sandton on Saturday.

The ritual apparently involved some 33 people, with 20 managing to pull themselves from the river.

"We are resuming this morning to continue (the search) where the incident occurred. We will be searching along the Juskei River stream and see whether we can locate the 15 people believed to be missing in this incident. Two bodies have been found and one person rescued, with 15 more still being searched for," says Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

Mulaudzi says they believe children are among those missing.

"We do not know at this stage but they vary between minors and adults, we do not know the ages in between there, but we know that there were younger kids there and adults who were also in attendance in the church ritual.

"The K9 and rescue units as well as the National Sea Rescue Institute, Gauteng emergency services and the city’s aquatic rescue team are part of the search and rescue mission."
